LGBTQ IN FILM

London’s LGBT Film Festival makes its return to the capital this month. But in a recent study of 900 popular films from 2007 to 2016, it was found that only 1.1% of speaking characters were lesbian and none were transgender.
Carrie Lyell, editor of DIVA, the leading magazine for lesbians and bisexual women, told SISTERHOOD: ‘Poor LGBTQ representation in Hollywood is a result of the sexism which is endemic in the industry. As long as the idea that women’s stories don’t sell continues to go unchallenged, LGBTQ stories will remain untold.’
But in 2017 alone, there were some beautiful films produced with lesbian and transgender storylines. And we want to give them a platform.
So curl up, grab some popcorn and a friend/relative/stranger and enjoy these cinematic spectacles.
BFI Flare: London LGBT Film Festival will
run from 22 March to 1 April at BFI Southbank.
